Posted on: 13 Dec, 2023

After much effort, the Somali Research and Education Network (SomaliREN) has successfully deployed eduroam, the secure world-wide education roaming access service.

eduroam allows students, teachers and researchers in more than 100 countries to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply connecting and using the same credentials used in the home institution, regardless of location worldwide.

Eng. Ahmed Siyad, the CTO of SomaliREN, reported to BBC Somali News: “SomaliREN has now implemented this service at its central center and plans to deploy it across universities, research centers and public places so that students, learners and researchers can always get free internet access.

The Somali Research and Education Network (SomaliREN) is connected to global research and education network through the UbuntuNet network, the regional research and education network for eastern and southern Africa. The NREN is also a member and shareholder of the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN) and continues to be an active member contributing to the regional REN’s activities.

SomaliREN currently connects over 59 campuses from 28 universities and research institutions serving an aggregate of 36,000 students, researchers and faculty members.

The European Union has had a very positive impact on the evolution of SomaliREN largely within the framework of its co-funded project AfricaConnect, Africaconnect3 at present.
