Strengthening Leadership for the Future of Research and Education Networks

ASREN and NREN representatives come together in Rabat for a leadership development workshop supported by EUMEDplus

Leadership in research and education networks is no longer only about delivering strong technical infrastructure and services. As NRENs navigate increasingly complex stakeholder environments, changing priorities, and rapid technological developments, effective leadership also requires the ability to communicate with clarity, build trust, align people around shared objectives, and influence beyond traditional organizational boundaries.

These were at the heart of a Leadership Training Workshop organized by ASREN on 23 July 2026 in Rabat, Morocco, bringing together representatives from ASREN and NRENs from across the region. The workshop was funded by the EUMEDplus project as part of its capacity-development efforts for ASREN and the NREN community.

From Technical Leadership to Strategic Influence

The workshop was designed around the evolving needs of NREN leaders, recognizing that the success of research and education networks increasingly depends on more than technology alone.

Led by Sandy Molloy of Geek to Lead, with Dr. Yousif Asfour of AUB/TechCARE contributing to the programme, the workshop combined practical frameworks, interactive exercises, group discussions, and reflection around key leadership capabilities.

Participants explored how to:

  • communicate with strategic clarity;
  • communicate vision and direction in ways that create alignment and momentum;
  • build and manage relationships based on trust;
  • think and act strategically;
  • negotiate for outcomes rather than positions;
  • strengthen executive presence and influence.

The workshop encouraged participants to reflect on the realities of their own organizations and consider how leadership and communication practices can support better collaboration and decision-making.

Leadership That Connects People and Priorities

The workshop provided a space for representatives from different NRENs and ASREN to exchange experiences, learn from one another, and reflect on the leadership challenges and opportunities they face as part of a connected regional community.

Participants included representatives from ASREN, CNRST/MARWAN, CYNET, GÉANT, LYREN, PALNREN, SESAME, and UM6P.
