EUMEDplus
is a project co-funded by the European Union (EU) aimed at advancing digital infrastructure and boosting
the research and education (R&E) landscape in the South-East Mediterranean region.
Building on the successes of earlier EU-funded projects like
AfricaConnect and EUMEDCONNECT,
EUMEDplus focuses on strengthening the capabilities of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs)
in the region, enhancing their digital transformation efforts, and expanding their service offerings.
Coordinate governance and project management to ensure efficient and consistent management of the Action implementation
WP2 Connectivity infrastructure
Procure, deploy and manage international circuits for the Southern Neighbourhood countries and develop NREN readiness to maximise Medusa utilisation
WP4 Outreach, Advocacy and Dissemination
Ensure adequate project visibility, dissemination and stakeholder engagement, including Medusa advocacy in North Africa and science promotion
WP1 Capacity Development
Strengthening human capacities and operational capability as well as on organisational and financial sustainability planning at different levels – regional (ASREN) and national (NRENS)
WP3 Digital Data Infrastructure and Services
Enhancing data infrastructure scalability, ensuring access to services for researchers, students, supporting NRENs, establishing federation systems, while promoting cross-border HPC collaboration and advancing Open Science
Key Objectives and Activities
Strengthening Research and Education Networks (NRENs)
EUMEDplus aims to enhance the operational efficiency, maturity,
and sustainability of ASREN and North African NRENs. This involves supporting digital
transformation in the R&E sector, fostering global scientific collaboration and innovation,
and promoting gender equality through dedicated conference tracks, mentorship programs, and training courses.
Enhancing Digital Infrastructure
The project focuses on increasing access to modern digital infrastructures and
technologies in the region. It will support North African NRENs in developing national readiness strategies
to fully leverage the Medusa submarine cable project
, a key EU digital global Gateway initiative.
This expansion will provide high-speed, secure connectivity between North Africa and Europe and explore
further extensions towards the Levant, ensuring ongoing international R&E connectivity for the Eastern
Mediterranean countries.
Expanding Data Infrastructure and Services
EUMEDplus will empower NRENs to address the challenge of scalable data infrastructures and
enhance the availability of value-added services and tools for end users. Emphasis will be
placed on building secure access systems, promoting cross-border cooperation in high-performance
computing (HPC) utilization, and fostering open science principles.
Empowering Women, Inspiring Success
As part of WP1 Capacity Building under the EUMEDplus project and in recognition of the significance of gender equality and equal opportunities, ASREN is dedicated to fostering inclusivity across all project activities while introducing targeted initiatives to empower women within NRENs.
Through two key programs—the Women in STEM Track at our e-AGE conferences and the upcoming Women in STEM Mentoring Programme—we aim to create meaningful opportunities for professional development, networking, and inspiration.
Women in STEM Track
The Women in STEM Track is a dedicated space within our annual e-AGE conferences, bringing together experienced professionals, rising talents, and industry leaders. Through panel discussions, success stories, workshops and interactive networking opportunities, ASREN facilitates connections that empower women to advance their careers and contribute to the STEM ecosystem.
This track is not just a discussion—it's a call to action to strengthen mentorship, amplify voices, and open doors for the next generation of women in STEM.
Highlights from e-AGE24
We were honored to host an inspiring Women in STEM panel at e-AGE24, featuring a group of remarkable women from the region to inspire and empower future generations.
Panelists shared pivotal moments, personal breakthroughs, and strategies to overcome obstacles in male-dominated fields. The discussion was centered around overcoming stereotypes, balancing family responsibilities, and navigating societal expectations. Panelists shared practical advice and empowering messages, leaving attendees with memorable takeaways such as:
