Women in STEM at e-AGE24: Empowering Stories, Inspiring Change

Posted on: 26 Jan, 2025

As part of ASREN’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusivity and gender equality under the EUMEDplus project, the Women in STEM Track at e-AGE24 (12 December, Tunis) offered a compelling platform for sharing experiences and addressing challenges faced by women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The session, chaired by Dr. Safa Nassereldin (Al Quds University), brought together trailblazing women from the region to inspire and empower future generations.

Panelists shared pivotal moments, personal breakthroughs, and strategies to overcome obstacles in male-dominated fields. Watch the full session on ASREN's YouTube Channel.

“I am not afraid to fight every day to prove I am here, but maybe I need more women to fight along.” said Dr. Ryma, underscoring the importance of solidarity among women in STEM.

Dr. Najah highlighted the transformative power of self-care and prioritization: “I have decided that I should come first, and that was the number one value I put for myself.”

Dr. Mona encouraged women to seek mentorship without hesitation, saying,“Have role models, but what is more important is to have the courage to talk to them, no matter how distant or difficult to reach they may seem.”

Dr. Ouafa emphasized the power of collaboration and continuous learning:“Share knowledge, collaborate with others, stay connected, and benefit from technological tools.”

Audience members resonated deeply with these reflections, drawing connections between regional and global challenges. A participant noted that while cultural factors can add complexity, the fundamental obstacles remain universal: “Just believe in yourself,” shared Dr. Islam Elmaged (President, National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Science, Egypt). Prof. Najiba Chkir (University of Sfax, Tunisia) commented, “We should accept ourselves, be proud of who we are, and challenge the glass ceiling above us. If we don’t want challenges, we wouldn’t go to school or graduate — perhaps we wouldn’t even be here today.”

The Women in STEM Track concluded with a call to action: women must confidently challenge stereotypes, lead with courage, and lift each other up. As Dr. Ryma passionately stated, “What is up to be, it’s up to us! Build your network, lift others up, embrace every opportunity, and believe in your ability.”

This impactful session marks a step forward in ASREN’s mission to support women in STEM and
create lasting change through collaboration and advocacy. Stay connected for more initiatives
as ASREN continues championing women in STEM under the EUMEDplus project.

Women in STEM: Overcoming Challenges, Inspiring Success’ – and what a session this was at e-AGE24! Such inspiring women, wonderful and witty storytelling, and empowering messages. Will take home especially this one: don’t be a burning candle, be a shining light!
