ASREN and Bibliotheca Alexandrina Sign MoU to Advance Open Science

On 14 May 2025, the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN) and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking the launch of a strategic partnership to advance open science and strengthen research collaboration in Egypt, the Arab region, and Africa.

The agreement was signed at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and Mr. Yousef Torman, Managing Director of ASREN. The MoU was signed on behalf of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina by Dr. Mohamed Soliman, Acting Deputy Director.

The collaboration focuses on developing national and regional open science roadmaps, supporting policies that promote open access and knowledge sharing, and strengthening digital research infrastructures. Key areas of cooperation include the development of shared digital platforms—such as the Arab Open Science Cloud—to connect libraries and enable the exchange of research resources, as well as capacity-building initiatives targeting researchers and librarians across Africa.

In addition, the partnership aims to establish a regional and African network of researchers and library professionals to foster collaboration, exchange expertise, and improve access to global scientific resources.

During the signing ceremony, Mr. Yousef Torman highlighted the unique role of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina as not only a library, but also a digital hub, cultural landmark, and a leading center for advanced computing and research services, underscoring its importance as a strategic partner in advancing open science.

This partnership reflects ASREN’s continued commitment to promoting open science, enabling regional collaboration, and supporting sustainable research ecosystems.
